Sophomore pacing filly Brave Chic held on bravely to notch her first career win on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Hiawatha Horse Park, and provided trainer Joseph Montour his first career training win in the process.

Sent off as the 4-5 favourite in the second race, Brave Chic made every call a winning one for driver Scott Wray. After fractions of :29.3, 1:01.1 and 1:30.1, Brave Chic held off the late threat of Scottish Noble (Rob Doyle) to win by a neck in 1:59.2. Cold Beer Calling (Donnie Rankin, Jr.) rounded out the top trio.

Brave Chic (Royal Mattjesty – Fit N Bad) picked up her first win in eight starts, seven of those coming for owner-trainer Montour of Oskewen, Ont. He notches his first lifetime win in his seventh start.

Positioned perfectly second over by driver Natasha Day, Monteverde pounced off cover to connect in the $5,000 Preferred 3 Trot at Hiawatha Horse Park on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Settled into fourth early, Monteverdi allowed Shouldaknownbetter (Anthony Hamlin) to carve out fractions of :29 and :59.4 without any pressure, then followed the cover of Global News (Garrett Ronney) down the backside before a 1:28.1 third station. Day tipped three-wide with Monteverdi around the far turn and when the field hit the head of the lane Monteverde that clear stretch was music to the trotter’s ears. He sprinted past his rivals to deliver as the prohibitive 2-1 favourite and win by a length in 1:58.2. Global News held off Workinitonbroadway (Donald Rankin, Jr. ) for second.

Trained by Jeff Graham for owner Karry Howard of Wardsville, Ont., Monteverdi (Cantab Hall – Cameo Credit) picked up his sixth win of the year and 25th lifetime tally. The nine-year-old now sports a career bankroll of $285,178.
